The person I have chosen to write about that has been interviewed by Elvis Mitchell on The Treatment is: Tim Burton. His current role in the film industry is a Director and has worked on such films, as mention in the interview, live action: “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and stop animated: “Corpse Bride” and “Nightmare Before Christmas” Other and more recent films, that were not mention in the interview, would be “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” (2007) and “Alice in Wonderland” (2010.) This interview was conducted Wed. February 15, 2006.
Tim Burton, growing up, was seen as wired because he enjoyed watching monster movies and did not talk much. In his films there is usually a character that can be described as wired but just as he the character misunderstood. I enjoyed listening to Tim Burton’s take on using stop-motion animation, how he enjoys using it because one can see the craftsmanship in the work; rather then making movies using a computer, as many favor to do now a days. It was a surprise to hear that he was working on “Corpse Bride” and “Charlie and the Chocolate factory” at the same time. During the day they would shoot “Charlie in the chocolate Factory” and then after Johnny Depp would come over to do voice recordings for the “Corpse Bride.” As one can imagine, working on two movies at once can prove to be a hectic task and Tim Burton said he was lucky he had Johnny Depp along with some other working on the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” that he could pull to work on the “Corpse Bride,” but stated he was a bit schizophrenic about the situation, while he was doing it, and does not imagine he would do it again.
In regards to stop animation he states:
“there something about that medium that’s like Pinocchio, or something, where you’re bringing this inanimate object to life that’s just, just, really beautiful and you just feel the hand made quality to it which is something I love.”
Because it’s an old fashion technique Tim Burton enjoy making some of his film using stop motion animation, he says it’s the history of cinema shooting frame by frame.
I feel this quote is note worthy because one can see that this is something he passionately believes; and you see it in his work, in his films of stop-motion animation, that he is able to create a film using characters that are crafted together and shot frame by frame moving these character’s inch by inch. As he says the character’s come to life, and the ability to convince the audience believe these characters are living in the world that was created for them makes for a good and enjoyable movie.
“What happens with computers is that people are, they looking at Pixar’s success so that’s why they are… that’s why I think there’s a sameness about it that they are just trying to do just what they do and match that success.” Here Tim Burton is explaining how there are some movies that are created with the use of computer but the story does not call for it; that because another movie was successful using this technique others feel the need to do same and hope for the same success. But when working with movies this is something that should not be done, one should become familiar at the story and take into consideration on what type of technique should be used. The technology may be there but not all movies call for it.
In this next quote Elvis Mitchell was talking to Tim Burton about how with both “Corpse Bride” and “Nightmare Before Christmas” Tim Burton is dealing with a lot of dead people (characters). But Tim Burton explains to him its not so much about the living and the dead but the two sides of life in which people live in; in stating:
“That’s what I love about fairy-tale its not… the great thing about that form is you don’t have to be literal, to me it’s less about life and death then it is about the two sides of life; the repressed verses the more open and artistic.”
This is note worthy because here Tim Burton is displaying his creativity by giving the audience two different worlds, some may see it as the living and the dead but really its two different ways of living. One world can be conservative, concealed, or shy; the other world can be more open, risk takers, or creative.
World of the Living
World of the "Dead"
Tim Burton is an extraordinary director with a very talented way of making movie. Stop animation is one of his gifts giving the audience beautifully crafted characters in a world created for them which make the film that much more realistic; because it’s not just an image moving on the screen, the audience can see the depth of field. Even in his live films he gives the audience character’s that may appear strange but have the biggest hearts or are creative; basically these are the character’s that represent people, in our everyday life, that we see as odd and strange. The message for the audience, when presenting such characters, is not to judge people by appearance. We need such people working in the film industry keeping stop animation alive and with the capability of presenting film in such unique ways.
